Heat Therapy

Heat therapy can be a powerful tool for relieving muscle stiffness, reducing spasms, and improving circulation: symptoms that are common in MS and many other conditions. 

Applying gentle heat to sore or spastic muscles helps them relax, increases blood flow, and can make stretching or movement easier. For minor stiffness or pain, 15-20 minutes of heat therapy can bring noticeable relief, while longer sessions may help with more severe discomfort.

However, people with MS must use heat therapy with caution. Many with MS are sensitive to heat, and even a slight rise in body temperature can temporarily worsen symptoms—a phenomenon known as a “Uhtoff’s Phenomenon”. Always start with the lowest heat setting and limit sessions to 15-20 minutes unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider. Monitor for any changes in symptoms, and stop immediately if you notice increased weakness, fatigue, or other issues. 

Contrast Therapy

Contrast therapy – alternating between hot and cold – offers a unique approach to recovery and symptom management, especially for people who experience both pain and stiffness.
