Frogg Toggs Cooling Towel Review: Does It Help With MS Heat Sensitivity?

MS Product Reviews

In this Frogg Toggs cooling towel review, we’ll explore whether this easy-to-use MS cooling product is worth your time (and money).

When you’re living with multiple sclerosis, managing heat sensitivity isn’t just a warm-weather problem… It can affect you in any season. Whether it’s a warm shower, the stress of a busy day, or even wearing bundled layers in the winter, small temperature increases can lead to fatigue, weakness, or changes in walking ability.

That's why finding reliable cooling tools for MS can make such a big difference in your everyday life. You deserve simple, effective solutions that actually work – and you don't need to spend a fortune to find them. In this product review, I’m sharing everything you need to know about the Frogg Toggs cooling towel – and why it’s one of the cooling products I recommend to my clients.

By the way, have we met? I’m Dr. Gretchen, an MS-Specialized Physical Therapist and founder of The MSing Link – a research-based online program for people with MS, podcast, and book that’s helped thousands of people with MS feel stronger and walk better through MS-specific exercise and practical strategies that fit into your daily routine.

What Is the Frogg Toggs Cooling Towel?

Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad Cooling Towel

The Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad cooling towel is an evaporative cooling product designed to quickly reduce your body temperature when heat or exertion starts to take its toll. Made from a soft, flexible material, it’s activated by wetting it with water, so you don’t need refrigeration or ice packs. Once wet, it stays cool for hours and can be stored damp in its tube for your next use.

What makes it especially useful for people with MS heat sensitivity is its simplicity: wet, wring, and drape it around your neck, shoulders, or wrists. The cooling starts immediately, which can help you stay ahead of overheating before symptoms kick in. Personally, I’m a fan of this product – so much so that I included it in the 2025 edition of our MS Holiday Gift Guide

How Does the Frogg Toggs Cooling Towel Work?

The Chilly Pad relies on evaporative cooling, a process that removes heat from your skin as water in the towel evaporates into the air. For people with MS, even a small decrease in temperature can reduce the temporary worsening of symptoms caused by heat exposure.

Because it cools through airflow, it’s important to wear it where air can circulate, like over your neck or shoulders, rather than tucked under your clothing. It’s lightweight enough to use during workouts, errands, or outdoor activities, and flexible enough to wrap comfortably wherever you need it most.

Why I Recommend Frogg Toggs for MS Heat Sensitivity

I’ve tested tons of MS cooling tools over the years, and Frogg Toggs stands out for a few reasons. The first is how immediate the cooling feels. Unlike other cooling towels that take several minutes to activate, this one delivers an instant chill the moment you put it on.

I also love that it’s lightweight and flexible, because it’s easy to fold, wear, and carry in your bag. Some cooling products don’t stay cool for long, but I’ve found that this one stays cool for a long time – even in warmer environments.

It’s also low maintenance: just wet it before putting it away, and it’ll be ready to go next time. When insurance often doesn't cover the tools that could genuinely help you manage symptoms, finding affordable options that actually deliver results matters. That makes it an easy first step for anyone looking to manage heat sensitivity without investing in more expensive tools right away.

To sum it up? The Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad cooling towel is:

  • Quick to activate
  • Lightweight and flexible
  • Long-lasting
  • Low maintenance
  • Affordable

When to Use a Cooling Towel for MS

You don’t have to wait until you’re overheating and at risk of triggering a flare-up to use a cooling towel. In fact, it works best when you use it before you start to feel too warm. Think of it as a proactive tool for your comfort and energy.

Here’s when I typically recommend it:

  • Before, during, and after exercise to prevent overheating and fatigue
  • During chores or errands, especially in warm indoor spaces
  • After a warm shower, when body temperature naturally spikes
  • Outdoors during hot days, travel, or physical activity
  • In moments of stress, since stress can raise your core temperature

Inside The MSing Link community, members often share their favorite cooling strategies and when they've found them most helpful – because sometimes the best tips come from others who really understand what you're going through.

Precautions and Tips for Best Results

Cooling tools can make a big difference in how you feel day to day, but like anything else with MS, it’s all about finding what works best for you. Everyone’s body responds a little differently to heat, cooling, and temperature changes – and that’s okay.

If you’ve ever tried a cooling product before and felt like it didn’t help much, don’t give up just yet. Sometimes, adjusting how or when you use it can completely change your experience.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of a Frogg Toggs cooling towel:

  • Maintain airflow. Evaporative towels rely on airflow to work. If the towel is covered or tucked under clothing, it can’t breathe, which limits its ability to cool.
  • Re-wet as needed. In humid weather, evaporation happens more slowly, so the towel might need more frequent re-wetting to stay cool.
  • Avoid over-cooling. The goal isn’t to make yourself cold; it’s to bring your temperature back to normal. Some people find that dropping their core temp too low can make symptoms worse.
  • Use cooling in key areas. The neck is one of the best spots since it contains major blood vessels close to the skin’s surface, helping lower your core temperature faster.
  • Layer if needed. For mild heat sensitivity, the towel alone may be enough. If you’re more sensitive, pair it with other cooling products for MS like the HyperKewl wristbands, Embr Wave bracelet, or a ThermApparel cooling vest for extra relief.

And don’t forget: heat-related symptom flare-ups are temporary. Increased weakness or fatigue during overheating is a pseudo-flare, not permanent nerve damage. Once your body cools down, your symptoms should calm down.

Is the Frogg Toggs Cooling Towel Worth It? My Take as an MS Specialist

Yes. The Frogg Toggs cooling towel is one of the simplest and most effective tools I’ve used for MS heat sensitivity, and it’s incredibly affordable. I recommend it to many of my clients because it delivers noticeable results without any prep work or complicated setup.

This product won’t cool your entire body like a vest might, but it’s great for keeping handy throughout the day, especially since the neck location helps regulate your core temperature quickly. For anyone curious about cooling products for MS, this is an easy, low-cost way to see how your body responds to temperature regulation tools.

Relief Is Possible With the Right MS-Friendly Tools

Managing MS heat sensitivity can feel frustrating – maybe even overwhelming when you're not sure what will actually help. But it doesn't have to be complicated. Simple, affordable tools like the Frogg Toggs cooling towel can help you move from feeling stuck and overheated to staying active and in control – whether it's 95 degrees outside or just a little too warm indoors.
