Multiple Sclerosis Support Group: How To Find The Right Support For You

MS Protocols & Treatments

If you or someone you love has MS, the idea of joining a support group might feel a little intimidating—or even pointless. When you’re focused on physical symptoms, it’s easy to overlook the power of connection. But sometimes, hearing a simple “me too” from someone who truly understands is exactly what you didn’t realize you needed.

That’s why inside The MSing Link, we host two support groups each month: one open to everyone, and another specifically for those who have been living with MS for a while. No matter where you are in your journey, there’s a space for you.

By the way, have we met? Hi, I’m Dr. Gretchen Hawley, a physical therapist and MS-certified specialist. I’m the creator of The MSing Link, an online program and book designed to help people with MS improve their mobility, strength, and confidence through targeted, research-backed strategies. I’m passionate about making life with MS feel more manageable, and over the years, I’ve helped thousands of clients take real steps toward feeling stronger and more in control of their symptoms.

Today, there are more options than ever for finding the right support group, whether you prefer meeting in person or connecting online from the comfort of home. In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of MS support groups, the different types available, and how to find one that truly fits your needs. We’ll also share why The MSing Link is a unique, supportive community that blends encouragement with real, practical action.

Why Consider a Multiple Sclerosis Support Group?

Living with MS can bring up a lot of emotions — frustration, fear, sometimes even loneliness. Support groups can help in so many ways:

  • You won’t feel so alone. There’s something powerful about talking to people who actually get what you’re going through.

  • You’ll pick up real-life tips. People love to share what’s worked for them—whether it’s how they manage symptoms, stay active, or just get through tough days.

  • You’ll feel supported. It’s a safe space to open up, celebrate small (and big!) wins, and talk about the hard stuff without having to explain yourself.

  • You’ll hear about helpful resources. From new treatments to research updates, support groups are a great place to stay in the loop.

  • YOU might even help someone else! Sometimes, just sharing your experience or being there to listen can mean the world to someone else in the group.

What Are You Looking For In An MS Support Group? Let’s Discuss!

Before jumping into any group, it helps to ask yourself what you're really hoping to get out of the experience. Are you craving friendship and connection with people who understand what you're going through? Or are you looking for something more structured, where you can actually learn strategies to improve your symptoms and feel more in control of your day-to-day life?

There’s no wrong answer—but knowing what you need can help you find a group that truly supports you.

What Types of MS Support Groups Are There?

Everyone’s needs are different, and so are support groups! Here are some of the most common types:

In-Person Groups

These usually meet at local hospitals, community centers, or through MS organizations. If you enjoy face-to-face connections, these groups can be a wonderful way to build relationships and gain support in person.

Online Groups - My Personal Favorite!

Online support groups have come a long way, and they’re often the easiest and most effective way to get the help you need. You don’t have to worry about transportation, accessibility, or even leaving the house.

Whether you're dealing with fatigue, mobility challenges, or just live far from in-person options, online support can fit into your life without added stress.

My favorite? The MSing Link.

This isn’t just a support group. The MSing Link is a comprehensive online program created specifically for people with MS who want to see real improvements in everyday life. Inside the program, you'll find a supportive community, monthly Q&A sessions with me (Hi I'm Dr. Gretchen Hawley, PT), and expert-led MS-specific exercises and education to help you feel stronger, move better, and build confidence.

Why The MSing Link Works

  • MS-specific exercises and education. You’ll receive guidance that's rooted in science and tailored to your symptoms.

  • A community that understands. You'll be surrounded by others who are working toward similar goals and who truly get what you're going through.

  • Expert support every month. You’ll be able to ask your personal questions and get real-time answers during our monthly Q&A sessions.

  • Progress you can feel. Members often report real-life wins like walking through a store without needing a break or feeling more energized throughout the day.

If online support groups haven’t really been your thing in the past, I get it. They can sometimes feel a little impersonal or lack real accountability. But The MSing Link is different. It brings together everything you’d want from an online program—real connection, expert guidance, and flexibility you can actually stick with. Plus, the built-in community and monthly check-ins help keep you motivated and on track. It’s more than just support. It’s a place to make real progress and feel like you’re not doing this alone.

How To Find The Right MS Support Group For You

Finding a group that feels right can take a little time, but it's worth it. Here are some places to start:

  • National organizations like the National MS Society, MS Foundation, and MSAA have directories of support groups.
  • Ask your healthcare provider or MS specialist – they often know about local or online options.
  • Search online for MS groups on Facebook.
  • Check with local hospitals, community centers, or faith groups for meeting listings.
  • If you’re interested in learning more about The MSing Link – you can do so right here.

Tips For Choosing The Best Fit

  • Try a few groups. It’s okay to visit more than one before deciding where you feel most comfortable.
  • Think about your preferences. Do you want to meet in person or online? Do you prefer a big group or something smaller and more personal?
  • Look for groups that match your needs. Some groups are for people with MS, others for caregivers, and some for both.
  • Pay attention to the atmosphere. The best group is one where you feel safe, respected, and heard.

The Power of Online Support – And Why The MSing Link Is Different

For many people with MS, online support is not just a convenience – it’s a lifeline. Fatigue, mobility issues, or distance can make it hard to attend in-person meetings. Online groups break down those barriers and let you connect anytime, anywhere.

The MSing Link is more than just a support group. It’s a community designed specifically for people with MS, led by me, Dr. Gretchen Hawley, a physical therapist and MS specialist.

Here’s what makes The MSing Link special:

  • Support + Action: The MSing Link blends the encouragement of a support group with a step-by-step action plan. You’ll find both emotional support and practical tools to help you move forward.
  • Tailored Exercise Classes: Live and recorded classes designed for all ability levels, focusing on strength, balance, and mobility.
  • Expert Guidance: Monthly Q&A sessions with Dr. Gretchen and guest experts, plus a library of videos on MS symptom management.
  • Community: A private Facebook group where members cheer each other on, share wins, and talk through challenges.
  • Accountability: Orientation calls and 1:1 mentor support help you stay motivated and on track.

This message from a member says it all:

“I’ve improved my walking more in one year with The MSing Link than I did in 10 years of other PT. The support and encouragement from the community make all the difference.”
